Customer stories: Rachel's EV upgrade - smarter charging and simple setup

In our customer stories series, we shine a spotlight on Indra drivers and the real-world benefits they’ve discovered from charging smarter at home.

Meet Rachel Roberts — an experienced EV driver who’s been using her Indra Smart PRO for over four years. When she recently upgraded to a new EV, she found herself navigating multiple apps — her new car, her energy provider Octopus, and her Indra charger. While managing several systems was a learning curve, Rachel kept her home charging running smoothly and shares how she adapted to the change.

What is your EV driving history?

Rachel told us, “I made the switch to EV driving in March 2021, welcoming a Lexus UXe to my driveway with a mix of excitement and trepidation about a whole new way of powering my driving.

Like most drivers switching to an EV, I put most of my effort into thinking about which car to order, and only after it arrived, did I think about the best charger! It meant for the first few weeks of my EV driving experience, I was charging through the three-pin plug kit supplied with the car, until my Indra Smart PRO was installed and I got a smarter way to motor."

What charger did you choose?

"I chose the Indra Smart PRO, and it was a game-changer, helping me to fully realise all the benefits of EV driving. I live in a rural location and we’re not on gas, so I have to find providers who offer electricity-only energy tariffs.  Surprisingly, back in 2021, most of the EV energy tariffs on offer were only available to dual fuel (gas and electricity) customers, so I had limited options, but I found I was eligible for the Octopus Go tariff, which was available to electricity-only customers."

For the last four years, I’ve been fully embracing the EV life, saving money, time from not calling into petrol stations, and doing my bit for lower carbon living.

How have you saved on energy costs?

"I was delighted last year when the Intelligent Octopus Go tariff was expanded to include Indra Smart PRO users, so I reached the moment of EV driving perfection, with access to this super smart tariff resulting in achieving an average cost of £7 per week to power my motoring, charged at a time that’s best for the grid as well as my pocket."

What happened when you made the switch to a new car?

"I was reassured that everything would work just the same, so it was brilliant when it was delivered to my driveway. Unlike my first EV experience, I had my Indra Smart PRO charger already in place and waiting.  Which was lucky, as the car was delivered with only 50 miles of range. I needed some juice in it straight away, so I could then hit the road and put my new EV through its paces. 

With my Indra Smart PRO, I could just ‘Boost’ charge straight away, and within two hours, I’d added enough to my range to pop to the shops and taxi my children around for the rest of the day."

Were there any issues with scheduling?

"Plugging the new EV in at the end of my first day, I then wondered if I needed to make any changes, as I was set up to charge a Lexus UXe, but now I was plugging in a VW id3.  I searched online and found very little information on what to do in the scenario of swapping your old EV for a different model.  So, I plugged in and thought I would just see if it worked automatically, but sadly, the next morning, I found no charge had been added."

What about all the apps?

"When I welcomed my first EV in 2021, only Indra had an app so it was really easy to know the best place to manage the charge plan, but now in 2025 there is the ability to manage your EV charging through Indra, Octopus and VW’s own app, so I wasn’t sure if I needed to make changes to all three apps, or if one app would programme the others."

How did you solve the issue?

"I called Octopus for advice. I always find their customer service amazing, but again, they had limited information on how it worked switching over to a second EV.  Their advice was to remove my old Lexus as a device on the Octopus app and then reinstall it as though I were a first-time user.  This took a matter of minutes, was super straightforward, and meant the following evening, when I plugged in, I had a successful overnight charge. 

Things are now working as brilliantly as they were when I started with my first EV, and I’m back to achieving a smart charge that’s great for my pocket and the planet."
