Customer stories: Gregory's journey from range anxiety to EV confidence

In our customer stories series, we shine a spotlight on Indra drivers and the real-world benefits they’ve discovered from charging smarter at home.

Meet Gregory Moor — an EV driver who’s been driving an EV for 18 months and loving the advantages that an Indra Smart LUX offers. Read about how he came to decide on his choice of charger and the benefits he has come to love about his EV charger.

When did you take the plunge to all-electric driving?

Gregory told us, “Well, it must be 18 months or so ago when we decided to go all-electric and went for an MG EV4. Up until then, our previous car was a diesel hybrid. It was a lovely car, but it was at 114,000 miles, and I was conscious that at about 120,000 miles it would need a cam belt change and things like that. With our new car, there's no comparison because with an EV, it's so much simpler in terms of the drivetrain."

How did you choose an EV charger?

"Up until we chose the Indra Smart LUX, we'd been using a 'granny charger', and I have to say the LUX was a game changer because it charges so much faster.

There was a process I went through in terms of deciding which charger to go for:

At first, I thought that one with a screen might be nice, but then I thought about why I would need a screen on the machine outside when you're not out there looking at it. There's an app, which means we can see what the charger and car are doing from inside the house, or anywhere.

Also, I saw a picture of the inside of an Indra charger compared to the other one I was considering and the Indra looks really well designed compared to the other one.

The fact that it is British-made also factored into our decision process, as well as finding a friendly and knowledgeable charger installer local to us."

It's very easy to use and works very well with Octopus.

How have you saved money?

"Well, we've already saved on services for the car. The first service only cost about £88, so about £600 less than our old car. But with Octopus Intelligent Go, it only costs about seven pence per kilowatt. We decide, for example, that we need the car by 8 o'clock in the morning, plug it in before we go to bed, and it chooses what time to charge the car. It's just so easy."

The combination of Octopus and the Smart LUX is just so easy to use. So convenient because you're not having to pop round to the petrol station, you just plug in at home, and Octopus gets on with it.

Did you suffer from range anxiety?

"I think that when you start driving an EV, you get over range anxiety quite quickly. Especially now with so much good charging infrastructure and more being put in all the time. There are lots of chargers going in around us, even the local petrol station is putting in some 300kW chargers. But really, you just need to plan your journey a bit better, that's all.

An EV can tell you much more precisely than a typical combustion-engined car how much range you've got left. So you can know with accuracy if you've got enough charge to get home to your own charger or to a public charging point."

What about travelling further afield?

"Well, the other week I was going up to London, which is a good few hundred-plus miles each way. But what I usually do is stop at the services for a coffee on the way up and plug in there. I actually plugged into the slower chargers while I had a coffee, and when I came out, the battery was back up to 90%. That was enough to get all the way to where I needed to go in London and all the way back, putting the costs of the whole journey at under £21, which you couldn't do with petrol or public transport."

How do you see EV driving evolving in the future?

"Well, we're still at a fairly early stage, really, and the battery design is coming on at a huge pace. So, in four years, I would expect models to have perhaps twice the range of what they have now, and possibly be cheaper. The second-hand market is probably a no-brainer because they're already finding that the batteries last much better than people thought they would. Also, the infrastructure is getting better, and I'm very conscious of seeing chargers in places I hadn't seen them before on my last trip to London."
